Consumer fraud issues can include home repair, telemarketing, sweepstakes, charities and healthcare.
Telemarketing scams – this can be where you receive an unsolicited call from someone you do not know. There may be a claim that you won a free gift, vacation or prize but must pay postage and handling or other charges.
Home Repairs scams can include door-to-door salespersons with no local connections that offer to do home repair work for much less than the market price. You should be aware of contractors demanding cash payments or full payment before work is completed.
Scams involving charities can involve solicitations from a phony charity with a name that sounds like a better-known, reputable organization. In these situations solicitors cannot or will not answer basic questions about the charity or they use high-pressure tactics to obtain a donation.
Healthcare scams can include promoters that market a healthcare product as a quick, effective cure-all that remedies many diverse ailments. You should be concerned if the health product is advertised as being a scientific breakthrough, miraculous cure, exclusive product, ancient remedy or as containing a secret ingredient.
Sweepstakes scams can include magazine sellers or clearing houses that offer you prizes to get you to make purchases. You should be aware of promoters giving you the idea that you will closer to winning the grand prize if you purchase more of their products.

The Illinois Consumer Fraud Act prohibits deceptive or unfair acts or practices, and is applicable to a wide variety of conduct. In a car case, it applies to undisclosed accidents, fraudulent sales techniques, odometer fraud, and other deceptions car dealers may have engaged in when selling cars.
Truth in Lending Act. This act regulates disclosure of financing terms. It is applicable to car cases when the dealers force consumers to buy unnecessary insurance, claiming it would improve their chances of getting financing, or when the dealers do not allow consumers to take unsigned copies of their finance contracts to shop around for a better rate.
Illinois Lemon Law. This legislation is familiar to many consumers. However, there are also other federal laws or state laws that may apply to a given consumer fraud case.
Fraud can be a representation of a fact that a person relies on in taking action such as paying money, that had the accurate facts been known, the person would not have paid money.
